General questions:Q: How do I store alginate powder? A: Always store alginate cool and dry. When opening a bag, pour the alginate in an airtight container. The Cavex alginate container combines proper storage with ease of use. Q: After mixing the alginate is running or too thin. What happened? A: Most likely too much water was used, thus resulting in a thin and running mixture. Check packaging for right proportions. Make sure the right measuring devices are used. Cavex alginates have their own specific water cups and alginate spoons. They are easy to recognize as they all wear the Cavex logo. Q: Setting time is too quick or too slow. What might cause this? A: Temperature directly influences the setting time of alginates. Rise in temperature of 1 °C will reduce the setting with approximately 5 seconds and vice versa. By using the Cavex water-dosing bottle, water will be at room temperature at all times. In tropical environments, room temperature might be too high. It is then advised to use colder water. Water containing a lot of Calcium will reduce the setting time. Distilled water will slow down the setting.
Q: Alginate mixture contains air bubbles. What happened? A: Alginate was not mixed properly. For best mixing by hand, use a flexible cup and a rigid spoon. More information is found here... Q: Does disinfection influence the stability of an alginate impression? A: No, as long as the impression is not submerged for a too long period. Cavex advises against the use of alcohol-based disinfectants. These disinfectants will too quickly withdraw water from the impression, thus resulting is deformation. When using hypo chlorite (household bleach) submerge impression for 5 - 10 minutes in a 0,5 - 1% hypo chlorite solution. More information is found here... Q: During disinfection the solution shows a haze. Is this harmful? A: No, this is normal. When submerging an alginate impression in a water based solution the impression will dissolve a little. The longer the impression is submerged, the more the impression will dissolve. As long as the impression is not left submerged for a too long period, dissolving will do no harm to the accuracy. Q: How do I handle an impression after I have removed it from the mouth? A: Immediately after removing the impression from the mouth, rinse under running tap water to remove saliva and other residues. Disinfect impression as normal. See earlier questions for more information and recommendations regarding disinfection. After disinfection rinse impression under running tap water. Remove redundant water from impression by giving it a light tap or shake. Do not wipe or blow dry! Place impression in an airtight bag and/or container. Never include a piece of moist cotton wool or water! This will cause swelling of the impression, thus resulting in distortions. Keep impression at room temperature during the entire transport. Keep away from direct sunlight.
Allergies:Q: Does Cavex alginate contain latex, gluten or balsam of Peru?A: No Hypersensitivity for gluten, coeliakie, is a food allergy in which the human body does not bear gluten. Gluten are proteins that are found in wheat, oat, rye, barley, spelt and kamut. When those who suffer from coeliakie eat gluten, they will show symptoms like fatigue, stomachache, loss of weight and apathy.
Q: My patient is allergic to alginate. Can you give me the ingredients of your product? A: No, all ingredients of our alginates are confidential. However, if the patient can state his allergy we can either confirm or deny if the allergic reaction is caused by any of our ingredients. If needed we are willing to discuss the composition of the alginate with the patient's dermatologist. The most common allergic reaction to alginates is caused by flavourites (peppermint) or colouring agents.
Other questions:Q: I am an artist/teacher/trainer. I use Cavex alginates for the making of impressions of faces, hands, feet and/or other applications. I would like to slow down the setting of the alginate. Is that possible?A: Yes. Cold water will slow down the setting of the alginate. 1 °C will slow down the setting with approximately 5 seconds. The usage of distilled water will slow down the setting as well, due to absence of calcium. Maximum time possible is somewhere around 4 to 5 minutes. Alternatively, the setting time can also be increased by using water premixed with various amounts of sodium phosphate dissolved in it.
Q: I am an artist/teacher/trainer. I use Cavex alginates for the making of impressions of faces, hands, feet and/or other applications. I would like to dilute the alginate. Is that possible? A: Yes. 30% extra water will still give a proper impression. Q: I am an artist/teacher/trainer. I use Cavex alginates for the making of impressions of faces, hands, feet and/or other applications. Is it possible to reinforce the impression with cotton bandages? A: Yes. Please make sure the bandage is non-impregnated. Some bandages are impregnated with disinfectants or agents to stop bleeding and might interfere with the normal behaviour of the alginate. Q: How do I reinforce an alginate impression with bandages? A: Apply thin layer of alginate to body. Apply bandage and immediately apply another layer of alginate. The two layers of alginate will interconnect with the bandage in between. This will result in an impression that is less likely to tear.
