Cavex Outline

Cavex Outline is a eugenol-free impression paste developed specifically for taking accurate denture impressions. As the impression paste is eugenol-free, the patient will not experience any stinging or burning sensation upon tissue contact during the impression procedure.

An appropriate denture perfectly fits the denture bearing soft tissue. Cavex Outline was developed to enhance elaborated denture impressions. The impression paste is non-elastic and flows under light pressure, resulting in a very accurate impression of the soft tissue.

  • Why is the Eugenol replaced in Cavex Outline?

    There are two reasons why eugenol should no longer be used in dental products:

    • Technical
      Eugenol is a so-called polymerisation inhibitor. Eugenol is a quinone-related substance and to put it simple: eugenol takes away the free radical that is essential for the reaction of monomers into the polymer. So the polymerisation reaction cannot get started (is inhibited).
      This means that even very small residues of eugenol can prevent the proper polymerisation (hardening) of composite filling materials, synthetic resin cements etc.
    • Health
      Apart from an unpleasant “stinging or burning sensation caused by eugenol when it contacts soft tissues” and a “disagreeable taste”, eugenol might cause a “chronic gastric disturbance”.
      Eugenol is also considered to be an occupational hazard for the dental team.
  • How is Eugenol replaced in Cavex Outline?

    Eugenol is replaced by a dimer fatty acid. The reaction mechanism is as follows:

  • Can the working time be influenced by changing the mixing ratio?

    No, changing the mixing ratio will not change the working time or setting time. Only the viscosity will change. More base will result in thicker material, more catalyst will result in thinner material.

  • Can the working time be influenced by changing the temperature?

    Yes, the working time and setting time are strongly depending on the temperature. Cavex Outline is developed to show perfect snap-set at mouth temperature (32 °C) Therefore take notice that residues on the instruments are not set while the material is completely set.

  • What if the impression sticks to the gypsum and not to the denture?

    The most probable cause is: insufficient hardening

    • Follow the Instructions for Use and mix thoroughly.
    • The patient should rinse the mouth before taking the impression. Moist will initiate the setting reaction.
  • How to avoid damage during correction of the impression?

    Remove excess material with a sharp knife immediately after removal from the mouth otherwise the material becomes brittle and might chip.

  • How long can we extend pouring with gypsum?

    Impressions made with Cavex Outline are dimensional stable for at least
    7 days.

  • How can we best clean instruments, trays and dentures?

    Remove the large parts of Cavex Outline. Then immerse for 5 minutes in diluted (10%) acetic acid (ultrasone will increase the reactivity) The residue will soften and can easily be removed and brushed away under (hot) running water.

  • How can we best disinfect an Cavex Outline impression?

    Make sure that the impression is completely set. Then 3 minutes in a 3% Cavex ImpreSafe solution.

  • What is the advantage of Cavex Outline compare to silicone?

    Silicone impression materials show high elasticity and therefore
    undercuts are imbedded. As a result the dentist has to correct the prosthesis.
